Security and Development Think Tank honours one exceptional woman’s life-time achievement in Global Drug Policy
LONDON - On the occasion of the 50th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, ICOS today presented Dr Eva Tongue, Chair of the Vienna NGO Committee, with an award for her exceptional contribution to global drug policy in a career which has spanned the last five decades. Dr Tongue has been involved in the fight for an effective global drug policy since the early 1960’s and has been the Chair of the Vienna NGO Committee for now almost twenty years – a position she will keep for another two.
Initially created in 1983, the objective of the Committee is to support the work of the UNODC, provide information on NGO activities and involve a wide sector of civil society in raising awareness of global drug policies.
“Dr Tongue has dedicated nearly 50 years of her career to working towards a larger involvement of civil society in global drugs policy and raising awareness on this vital issue,” said Norine MacDonald QC, President of ICOS, who presented the award to Dr Tongue at a dinner in Vienna which was attended by delegates from the Commission on Narcotic Drugs. “The involvement of civil society is vital in the challenge for an effective global drug policy, and we congratulate Dr Tongue for tirelessly encouraging and facilitating the dialogue between UNODC and civil society.”
“Our committee provides a vital link between NGO's, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Commission on Narcotic Drugs,” said Dr Tongue on accepting the award. “The Vienna NGO Committee represents international, national and local NGOs and we aim to provide an essential voice for civil society to contribute to global drug policy.”
